Rutherford's Textbook on Vascular Surgery, now in its 5th edition, has long distinguished itself as the bible of vascular surgery—and for good reason. For starters, it weighs more than one and you would be hard pressed to find a thicker bible than this 2-volume set. But more than this, Rutherford's text deserves to be, at the very least, available to you if you perform any vascular surgery, talk about vascular surgery, or just want to learn about it. It is for the most part written by the "Who's Who of Vascular Surgery in North America." The data and opinions expressed are modern, mainstream, vascular thinking. The generous bibliography and clear and complete presentations are fertile starting points for most investigations and is all that is necessary for many others. The nagging question that I always have with these evolving tomes is this: Can I skip buying an edition?
