The author, Arthur E. Baue, MD, is a highly respected surgeon with more than 40 years of clinical and administrative experience. His book entitled Doctor, Can I Ask You A Question? is an encyclopedic resource for patients who seek answers to a wide variety of health care questions. It is very comprehensive in scope and at first glance may seem overwhelming. However, Baue has wisely broken the book's content into 12 broad categories, each of which is further subdivided into anywhere from 1 to more than 20 chapters or subcategories. For example, the broad category “What Are My Rights and Privileges With Doctors?” contains 13 chapters, such as “Finding a Doctor,” “Second Opinions,” “Tests and Treatment,” and “Medical Words and Jargon I Don't Understand,” to name but a few. Other broad categories include “Emergencies,” “Our Health Care System,” “Choosing a Hospital,” and “Disease Prevention.” Baue's belief in the importance of educating the public about their individual health care interests and rights is both pertinent and timely, especially because many common health care issues have become increasingly complex during the last decade. In all likelihood, Baue's book will prove to be most useful as a reference to guide patients through the complexities of 20th-century health care. The language is clear and the content is well organized. To complement the overall content of the book, Baue has also included more than 50 pages of reference material.
