Maine Medical Center is a 600-bed, independent academic medical center located in Portland. Portland and its adjacent community across the harbor, South Portland, together have a population of 85 000. The communities front on Casco Bay, a crenellated bight off the Gulf of Maine, whose waters are studded with spruce-covered islands and rock ledge. Portland offers a vibrant urban life usually found in much larger cities, including an excellent symphony orchestra, 2 resident string quartets, a museum of art and the Maine College of Art, a professional repertory theater as well as 3 seasonal production companies, and a summer opera company. Minor league professional teams in hockey and baseball add to the interest of the city as do brick sidewalks, 3 local breweries, and 2 brewpubs. Sailors around the world consider Maine’s coast prime cruising water. In addition, Maine’s many inland lakes and streams are set amid hills covered with pine, spruce, and birch where hiking, canoeing, camping, fishing, hunting, and skiing are all readily available.
