It seems like just yesterday that we began structuring our general surgery training programs to comply with an 80-hour work week for our trainees. It took some organization on our part, along with a deep cultural change for all of us who trained in a different era. My training began in 1980 when, as an intern, I was on call in-house every other night. Frequently, I was in the hospital until late into the evening on the night I was off and, not infrequently, many days would go by before I went home. We thought it was the right thing to do, to take care of patients. It was a rite of passage; it was how it was done.
