OPERATIONS ON THE BONES, JOINTS AND TENDONS

Tendon Transplantation for Paralysis of the Opponens Muscle of the Thumb. —Weil³⁹ used Book's method of tendon transplantation for paralysis of the opponens muscle of the hand and warmly recommended it. The operation consists in transplantation of the extensor of the fifth finger. An incision is made over the dorsum of the fifth metacarpal bone, and the extensor tendons exposed. The extensor minimi digiti is the tendon lying nearest to the ulnar border of the hand. This is freed and divided at the level of the metacarpal head. A second incision is made over the outer side of the first metacarpal bone. The freed tendon is then passed subcutaneously around the wrist and across under the palmar surface to the first metacarpal, to which it is fixed.
