The phrase "acute pneumocholecystitis" has been used to designate an acute inflammatory condition of the gallbladder associated with gaseous distention of its lumen. The formation of gas in such instances is usually due to the presence of gas-forming organisms within the gallbladder and conditions favorable to their growth.

Among the many acute intra-abdominal conditions which produce clinical problems acute pneumocholecystitis is relatively rare. The rarity of this condition has been pointed out by most authors writing on the subject. In 1956 LaCour and O'Neil² were able to collect only 37 cases of acute pneumocholecystitis from the literature and added 1 of their own cases; since then no additional cases have been reported. Few cases, indeed, occur in the surgical experience of one person, and these are usually published as isolated case reports because of their rarity.
