Hematocele, the effusion of blood into the tunica vaginalis testis, is a medical condition which is seldom seen in the newborn. This is the first case in over 30,000 births at Beth-El Hospital. In the adult, it is usually accompanied by injuries of the testicle, epididymis, or tunica vaginalis.
Campbell1 states that hematocele when it occurs is usually the result of birth injury. He gives no references, nor can we find any report of hematocele in the newborn in the past 10 years of Index Medicus. We therefore feel that the report of our experience is justifiable.
Report of Case
A 3,650 gm. white male child was born from a vertex position by low forceps without difficulty at 11:45 a.m. on Aug. 26, 1960. Examination by the resident after delivery disclosed bilateral hydroceles which transilluminated and were not tense.About 4 hours after delivery, the right scrotum was noted
