Experimental preparations of this sort have been employed to measure, sample, or titrate the intraluminal contents or to determine the physical activity of the bowel under a variety of laboratory conditions.
It was Thiry1 who first devised a practical and easily constructed blind fistula. One end of an isolated portion of the intestine was closed, the opposite opening brought out through the abdominal wall, and the continuity of the remaining intestine was reestablished by a direct end-to-end anastomosis.
