INTRODUCTORY REMARKS
One hundred and one years ago Dr. William Worrall Mayo established a general practice here. Born in England in 1819, he sailed to America in 1845, continued his medical studies in various areas in the East and Midwest, married Louise Abigail Totten Wright, started a family, ran a business, moved by stages farther west, fought Indians during the uprising of the Minnesota Sioux in the Civil War years, acted as examining surgeon for Army enrollment, and arrived at Rochester, Minn in 1863, at the age of 44. The strenuous life for him and his family seems to have been stimulating, for the "little doctor" lived to be almost 92 years of age.Two years before he arrived in Rochester, his son William James had been born in Le Sueur; two years after, Charles Horace.
