The Effect of Endotoxin on Renal Hemodynamics

THE STUDY of the effects of endotoxin on renal hemodynamics and function has formerly been limited largely to the events that follow the systemic administration of the endotoxin. As a result, it has been difficult to separate the direct renal effects of endotoxin from those which are secondary to systemic changes. Previous studies have shown a decrease in renal blood flow following the systemic administration of endotoxin.1 In the few studies of direct renal perfusion with endotoxin, the renal venous blood containing the endotoxin was allowed to recirculate and, therefore, the observed results could not be limited to local renal changes.2,3

This investigation was designed to study the direct effect of endotoxin on renal hemodynamics in an attempt to separate the systemic effects of endotoxin from the local renal effects. The experimental model was constructed so that none of the renal venous blood containing endotoxin was allowed to
