IN THE course of experimental studies to evaluate some effects of common-duct obstruction upon liver function, it became desirable to intermittently occlude and release that occlusion in the common duct. A T tube was therefore modified which allowed easily produced and reversible common duct obstruction in the experimental animal without the need for reoperation.
Description of the Tube
The tube is latex rubber and is modified from that commonly used for drainage after choledochotomy (Fig 1). Through several pilot models, a design was evolved which placed a balloon on one of the limbs of the tube. The balloon is inflated through a separate lumen which is carried on the sidearm of the T tube. When the tube is placed into a duct and the balloon is inflated, the walls of the balloon not only expand outward to obstruct the duct, but inward to obstruct the lumen of the tube (Fig
