In June 1969, the American College of Surgeons published a series of five papers on the teaching of Surgery in Medical Schools. These papers appeared in The Journal,1 and were later reprinted as a brochure and distributed widely to deans, chairmen of departments of surgery, curriculum committees, and medical students. These papers were written as an exercise in self-examination by outstanding leaders in the profession. Undoubtedly, some motivation was provided by the probing questions which were being asked in many medical schools as curriculum revision was undertaken in the vast majority of schools in the United States and Canada.
