Dr. Sumner I. Zacks, the Associate Professor of Pathology from the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine, has put together a very workable atlas of neuropathology, primarily for use by medical students and residents. The outstanding chapters in the book are those on Tumors, Diseases of Peripheral Nerves, Cellular Neuropathology, and Infectious Diseases and Metabolic Diseases.
The book is relatively weak in its treatment of the Neuropathology of Traumatic Lesions of the Central Nervous System and in its bibliography for that branch of neuropathology.
Most interesting is Dr. Zack's review of the new concept concerning "slow" virus infection of the brain characterized by spongiogram encephalopathy without evidence of inflammation. He accepts that Jakob-Creutzfeld disease, previously believed to be a degenerative disease, is in all probability an example of a disease caused by a "slow virus."
