Insufflation injury to the bowel in workers using compressed air is reviewed. A case occurred that is somewhat different from others in that the rectum escaped injury but the retroperitoneal space was insufflated via a skin wound in the natal cleft posterior to the anus. An experiment to measure the bursting pressure of normal bowel removed at operation was performed and this bursting pressure of bowel was found to be 5.9 pounds per square inch (psi). Further experiments in measuring the pressure on moving the source away from the target were performed.
