The effects of instillments of prednisolone (dose range 15.625 to 125 mg) on the antral phase of gastric secretion were defined in dogs with vagally denervated fundic pouches. Preliminary exposure to prednisolone provoked increased outputs of H+, but the outputs of Na+ were unchanged. Similar effects were elicited by instillments of 125 mg of prednisolone at pH 7 and pH 2. The greatest increase in secretion of H+ was evoked by 31.25 mg of prednisolone, but after the first hour, the outputs of H+ were closely similar with all doses.
Following exposure to prednisolone, the concentrations in the gastric juice of Na+ relative to H+ and of (Na+ + K+ ) relative to (Cl- + H+) were lower than in the control group. The results showed that topically administered prednisolone augmented the antral phase of gastric secretion.
