Vitamin A Pretreatment of Stress Ulcers in Rats

Fifty male rats, divided into two groups, were tested for the effect of pretreatment with vitamin A on the occurrence of stress ulcers. The experimental rats received a total of 10,000 international units of vitamin A prior to an eight-hour period of restraint in a modified flexible wire gauze restraining device. No differences were found between the experimental and control groups in the frequency of ulcerated stomachs or the mean numbers of ulcers per stomach. It is concluded that vitamin A exerts a negligible, if any, protective effect on the occurrence of gastric ulceration in the rat produced by the stress of restraint.
