It is a tribute to the author of this book that he has single-handedly compiled an interesting and authoritative text on such a broad subject. He obviously has had a vast clinical surgical experience. The book covers all the acute abdominal diseases that fall into the province of the surgeon in all age groups. It is a readable book and is studded with interesting historical notes plus explanations of surgical eponyms. The clinical information is detailed and a considerable amount of surgical technique is included. The illustrations are line drawings for the most part and, while not profuse, are adequate. A short bibliography is appended to each chapter. In addition to the usual index, the table of contents is in itself a miniature index.
