Current Concepts in Breast Cancer and Tumor Immunology (Proceedings of the San Francisco Cancer Symposium of 1973)

The proceedings of the Cancer Symposium that was held in San Francisco in 1973 under the sponsorship of the Claire Zellerbach Saroni Tumor Institute of Mt. Zion Hospital and Medical Center has now been published. It presents the papers and discussion of a group of investigators covering a broad spectrum of endocrinology, pathology, xeroradiographic diagnosis, and therapy of breast cancer. The proceedings also include summaries of current efforts in immunotherapy.

The volume offers the reader an introduction to some of the aspects of breast cancer management that remain unclear, and in doing so, it emphasizes the limited basis of data available for the formulation treatment programs. The urgent need for well-designed clinical studies is emphasized both implicitly and explicitly. The reader may well be confused by the various opinions expressed, but they serve to again reemphasize how little we really know about this highly lethal chronic disease of protean manifestations.
