Dr Barker's first edition in 1966 was an excellent primer for the student and house officer, told in lucid phrases, to give them an understanding of peripheral arterial diseases from the surgeon's standpoint. In that edition the only surgical treatments he described were sympathectomy and reconstruction for aorto-iliofemoral arteriosclerosis obliterans. This second edition maintains the high quality of the first, but it is now much more than a primer. It is a book, complete guide, not only for the previous level of reader, but also for the practicing vascular surgeon. Chapters have been added, some by guest authors, on the treatment of arterial vessels, arterial trauma, embolism, extrinsic compression syndromes, and techniques of hemodialysis access.
