Volume XIII/3, Surgery of the Ureter, is an excellent addition to the Encyclopedia of Urology. It is a concise but thorough and beautifully translated book. In the usual manner of Springer-Verlag, the illustrations are clean and accurate. They portray the text clearly and the publisher has placed them in juxtaposition to the text in a way that accommodates easy reading.
The authors editorialize liberally and occasionally slip into dogma to support their point of view, but generally they are conscientious enough to alert the reader when they are doing so. To counterbalance, they have included a truly encyclopedic bibliography that draws heavily on the past 20 years but includes a few appropriate historical references as well.
Chapter 1 is a review of the surgical approach to the ureter. Well written and illustrated, it would stand its own merit, but its true importance is revealed in all the subsequent chapters of
