ABSTRACT

The second edition of Mechanisms of Contraction of the Normal andFailing Heart is an extensive revision of the first edition and of the series of articles on which it was based, which appeared in the New England Journal of Medicine. The present volume is a comprehensive review of the physiology of muscle and cardiac contraction, its control, and its pathophysiology. A successful attempt to provide insight into the application of these physiological concepts to clinical cardiology is made in the book. In the extensive revision many excellent illustrations, sketches, and pictures that help the reader understand some of the more complex aspects of muscle physiology and of cardiac control are utilized effectively.

The chapters of the book are organized to proceed from a very basic discussion of functional anatomy and the biochemical basis of sarcomere shortening to the description of myocardial failure and the compensatory mechanisms used by intact
