The authors of this book attempt to review their experience with aspiration cytology and needle biopsy of the thyroid gland. To this end the book is divided into four major areas: obtaining and processing the specimen, illustrating cases, tabulating results, and providing an overview of the value of these techniques in managing patients with thyroid nodules.
In three of the four areas, the authors succeed. The first section on obtaining and preparing the specimen is all-inclusive and well presented. Patient selection, techniques, equipment, and fixation and staining of specimens are discussed and illustrated. Pitfalls to avoid and problems associated with the procedure are dealt with frankly.
