This book is intended as a manual of core knowledge for surgical trainees. It is not an atlas of operative surgery nor a compendium of reference materials. Its 1,277 pages make it a rather large manual but it is still approximately half the length of the Davis-Christopher Textbook of Surgery.
The book is divided into eight sections. The first section deals with basic subjects such as wound healing, infection, anesthesia, principles of oncology, principles of transplantation immunology, and neonatal management. The other seven sections are general, thoracic, cardiac, vascular, genitourinary, head and neck, and neurologic surgery. Gynecology for the general surgeon and endocrine surgery are included in the section on general surgery. Orthopedic surgery is excluded.
