This book presents 60 short summaries of things new, unusual, or controversial in gastrointestinal tract surgery from the Annual Continuation Course in Surgery at the University of Minnesota, Minneapolis. The faculty includes many well-recognized experts in the field. The individual presentations are grouped logically, each group being followed by a panel discussion. The topics, though advanced, are not exotic, but should be of general interest to any surgeon. The brevity of the individual reports makes this book ideal for reading in the free moments of a busy schedule. A narrow topic makes brevity consistent with depth in most of the presentations. In others, a current list of references serves as an invitation to further study. The eight panel discussions, which are particularly useful features, help to clarify and to place into perspective the preceding presentations. In some cases the discussions introduce additional controversy in an enlightening and often entertaining way.
