This publication from the American College of Surgeons Committee on Control of Surgical Infections has been the standard reference on the subject since its first edition in 1976. This second edition is an update. Each chapter has been revised and the bibliography updated. The two major changes in the new edition involve the chapter on the biology of infection, which in the second edition is called "Pathophysiology of Infection." In keeping with recent advances, the new chapter emphasizes the immune response of the host to infection. Maintaining the objective of the book as a manual, it avoids covering in depth the theoretic aspects of the defense mechanisms but refers instead to the importance of the immune defense mechanisms as they affect the clinical care of patients with infections.
