On May 9, 1987, friends and former residents of Jonathan E. Rhoads, DSc, assembled in Philadelphia to honor Dr Rhoads on the occasion of his 80th birthday. The meeting began with an introduction by Dr Clyde Barker, John Rhea Barton Professor and Chairman of the Department of Surgery at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia. Dr Barker provided an update and a description of the Department of Surgery at the University of Pennsylvania, its composition, and a description of its clinical and research programs.
Following this introduction, 17 of Dr Rhoads' former residents paid tribute to their teacher and presented a scientific paper in his honor.
