ABSTRACT

In Reply.—Dr Gibney raises the important. question of whether the changes in various physiologic parameters in a small-scale clinical study may be extrapolated to potential future clinical application.

Regarding modification of the stress response to injury, this is certainly not the case, and we agree with the comments by Dr Gibney. Therefore, in our conclusion we emphasized that future clinical studies should include an emphasis on potential side effects together with a further exploration of positive effects of preoperative prednisolone administration. We also agree with Dr Gibney that these lines of caution might have been valuable in the abstract, in order to avoid overinterpretation of the data.
