RT Journal A1 Wick EC, Hechenbleikner E T1 Ureteral injury during laparoscopic colectomy: The need for more information: comment on “incidence of iatrogenic ureteral injury after laparoscopic colectomy” JF Archives of Surgery JO Archives of Surgery YR 2012 FD March 1 VO 147 IS 3 SP 271 OP 271 DO 10.1001/archsurg.2012.93 UL http://dx.doi.org/10.1001/archsurg.2012.93 AB Palaniappa and colleagues1 describe the rate of ureteral injury in laparoscopic and open colorectal surgery at a single high-volume institution. Although the overall incidence of ureteral injury is low in this cohort, it is significantly higher in the laparoscopic compared with open surgery group. Detailed records of each patient who sustained an injury are included: presenting symptoms, diagnostic tests, location of injury, treatment, and follow-up. These are insightful details that are lacking from large studies based on administrative data. One important finding in this study is the long-term effect of these injuries, including significant reductions in renal function and the need for nephrectomy in 2 of 14 patients.
