Palaniappa and colleagues1 describe the rate of ureteral injury in laparoscopic and open colorectal surgery at a single high-volume institution. Although the overall incidence of ureteral injury is low in this cohort, it is significantly higher in the laparoscopic compared with open surgery group. Detailed records of each patient who sustained an injury are included: presenting symptoms, diagnostic tests, location of injury, treatment, and follow-up. These are insightful details that are lacking from large studies based on administrative data. One important finding in this study is the long-term effect of these injuries, including significant reductions in renal function and the need for nephrectomy in 2 of 14 patients.
