The additional failure of the bipartisan group of representatives and senators—the Super Committee—to agree on a slate of spending reductions triggered automatic cuts including a 2% across-the-board reduction in Medicare spending for 2013. As one of the fastest-growing segments of federal spending, Medicare costs will continue to be an inevitable target for cuts in the future. The 2010 Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (ACA) will develop more clinically oriented reforms that aim to improve health care delivery, while also reducing health care costs on a national scale.
