The left recurrent laryngeal nerve loops around the aorta at the level of the ligamentum arteriosum and then extends up posterior to the inferior thyroid artery. The right recurrent laryngeal nerve branches off the vagus, loops around the right subclavian artery, and courses posterior to the inferior thyroid artery.1
