The authors state that their study demonstrates that “LCBDE [laparoscopic common bile duct exploration] is equivalent in efficacy . . . to preoperative ERCP/S + LC [endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography sphincterotomy plus laparoscopic cholecystectomy] for patients with ‘likely’ common bile duct stones.” This statement is presumably based on the reported rates of total stone clearance (98% for ERCP/S vs 88% for LCBDE; P = .28).
