Because of their training mission, THs accept patients with advanced-stage or complex diseases that non-THs generally do not want to provide care for because of the greater time and expense associated with the clinical care these high-risk patients need. Given this reality, when comparing outcomes between these very different clinical care environments, a patient's baseline risk must be accounted for.
