Shirah, Bouton, and Komenaka, of the Maricopa Medical Center in Phoenix, Arizona, distinguish the advantages of isosulfan blue and methylene blue in the use of sentinel lymph node procedures for breast cancer. The authors have identified significant advantages relative to methylene blue injection over that of the commonly used isosulfan blue dye. Advantages of using methylene blue include lack of the anaphylactoid reaction and its interference with pulse oximetry. In addition, a significant advantage to the use of methylene blue is the product cost; the authors estimated that isosulfan blue was 80 times more expensive than methylene blue.
