The control of blood glucose levels in critically ill patients is considered important, but it is associated with increased risk of hypoglycemia. A meta-analysis that included 26 trials involving a total of 13 567 patients found a 6-fold increased risk of severe hypoglycemia among patients given intensive insulin therapy compared with controls.2
