We certainly appreciate the author's opinion but feel compelled to offer some humble thoughts from our vantage point. As general surgical residents who have trained exclusively with the 80-hour work week, we have no direct experience with the old model of training. The stories of 130-hour work weeks and going months without a day off are harrowing, and that style of training has fortunately faded away with the adoption of duty-hour restrictions. Still, we feel the current paradigm and proposed further reductions are too restrictive and seemingly arbitrary.
