A recent article1 highlighted one perspective on the conundrum of surgical resident duty hours. We certainly appreciate the author's opinion but feel compelled to offer some humble thoughts from our vantage point. As general surgical residents who have trained exclusively with the 80-hour work week, we have no direct experience with the old model of training. The stories of 130-hour work weeks and going months without a day off are harrowing, and that style of training has fortunately faded away with the adoption of duty-hour restrictions. Still, we feel the current paradigm and proposed further reductions are too restrictive and seemingly arbitrary.
