AB THIS STUDY was prompted by the occasional observation of specimens of the right part of the colon in cases of lesions which had been surgically diagnosed as carcinoma of the cecum and which, on pathologic examination, turned out to be merely inflammatory reactions about a diseased appendix. It was our objective to try to establish more exact methods of recognizing this condition so that a less radical operation might be done. In this regard, it was deemed necessary to investigate, as well, cases in which only appendectomy was done, to determine whether this operation alone could bring about cure in the face of the extensive inflammatory reaction about the offending appendix.REVIEW OF THE LITERATURE
