Handbooks which bring knowledge up to date take much of an encyclopedic approach, are disjointed in style, and emphasize multiple authorships. From time to time there is a need for a book or books which concisely review a moderately limited field from a particular viewpoint. Such a book is Cardiac Function in Health and Disease by Marshall and Shepherd. The authors have limited the review subject to the dynamics of the human heart, and, as such, paint a clear picture with a broad brush. By calling in experimental data only when necessary, it focuses primarily on human physiology and disease. The authors use a profusion of well-selected tables, graphs and charts, and are thus able to fill in the fine points with a considerable reduction in text. This volume is highly recommended
