AB The volume of information in several fields of medicine tends now to overwhelm both casual and serious readers. Handbooks which bring knowledge up to date take much of an encyclopedic approach, are disjointed in style, and emphasize multiple authorships. From time to time there is a need for a book or books which concisely review a moderately limited field from a particular viewpoint. Such a book is Cardiac Function in Health and Disease by Marshall and Shepherd. The authors have limited the review subject to the dynamics of the human heart, and, as such, paint a clear picture with a broad brush. By calling in experimental data only when necessary, it focuses primarily on human physiology and disease. The authors use a profusion of well-selected tables, graphs and charts, and are thus able to fill in the fine points with a considerable reduction in text. This volume is highly recommended
