AB Vx-2 carcinoma is a laboratory tumor, the product of the papilloma of the cottontail rabbit. Shope1 in 1933 demonstrated a virus as a causative agent. In 1935 Rous and Beard2 reported the progression of papillomas to carcinoma in domestic rabbits. It was subsequently shown that a squamous cell carcinoma derived from this tumor could be readily transplanted. Rous and his co-workers3 in 1946 noted the loss of viral dependency of the tumor and demonstrated the absence of complement-fixing antibody in these rabbits. Vx-2 carcinoma has since been free of viral characteristics and remains a readily transmissible laboratory tumor. The present investigation was designed to use this tumor to produce a simulated colon cancer, to study the natural history of this tumor in this setting, and to evaluate different methods which could be applied in treating this form of cancer.Materials and Methods
