Initially, he was seen in the orthopedic clinic with the complaint of a mass in his left upper arm of two months' duration. The mass caused no discomfort. The patient was a heavy cigarette smoker until two years prior to admission. On physical examination, a firm oval mass 8×5 cm, was present in the medial head of the left triceps, just above the elbow joint. On preoperative chest roentgenograms, the right hilus was noted to have an indistinct border. Routine laboratory studies and ECG gave findings within normal limits.
