TY - JOUR T1 - Global surgery and public health: A new paradigm AU - Meheš M, Abdullah F Y1 - 2011/10/01 N1 - 10.1001/archsurg.2011.264 JO - Archives of Surgery SP - 1218 EP - 1219 VL - 146 IS - 10 N2 - Indeed, it is true that the need for recognition of surgical care as an essential component of public health has never been more dire than it is today. According to currently available data, surgical conditions, including trauma and obstructed labor, account for more than 5 million deaths every year.1- 3 By comparison, the big 3 communicable diseases (malaria,4 HIV/AIDS,5 and tuberculosis)6 account for less than 4 million deaths every year. Thus, the publication of deVries and Price's book represents a timely treatise on the subject of global surgery. The authors' experiences bring necessary credibility to this endeavor. Dr Catherine R. deVries founded International Volunteers in Urology in 1994 and has been advancing urological education and training efforts worldwide. She has been recognized for this work through numerous awards granted by American and international associations. Dr Raymond R. Price has established himself as another global surgical education champion, focusing on improving access to care through projects he has led in Indonesia, Mexico, Ethiopia, Ecuador, China, Belize, Mongolia, and Haiti. He is also active domestically, serving as the American College of Surgeons' governor from the state of Utah and as a member of the American College of Surgeons National Committee on Trauma. This book evolved from a course the authors developed and taught together at the University of Utah.
