Military data suggest that rapid control of bleeding using expedited operations (damage control), early use of clotting factors, and reduced volumes of electrolyte solution are associated with reduced mortality.1 This is not a new idea. Sheldon et al2 from San Francisco General Hospital proposed a protocol to prevent coagulopathy in 1975; the approach emphasized early replacement of clotting factors.
