This series of 172 patients older than 16 years included 82% of patients with underlying chronic liver disease and 26% with cirrhosis. Results are excellent, including an operative mortality of 8%, major morbidity of 14%, and disease-free survival of 9 months; overall survival was 34 months. Stratification of patients with tumors 10 cm or larger (n = 114) or smaller than 10 cm (n = 58) demonstrated a 5-fold increase in mortality in the patients with smaller tumors.
