Many medical centers in North America have adopted the Intergroup 0116 regimen, consisting of fluorouracil and leucovorin with concurrent 45-Gy RT. Despite the positive results from this trial, several issues remain: (1) Can the high toxic effects of this regimen be reduced? (2) Can the CT be optimized?4- 6 (3) Can the massive toxic effects induced by RT be refined by improved CT planning? (4) Recent results of the Intergroup 0116 trial reveal that RT does not seem to benefit patients undergoing extended lymphadenectomy.7
