It was our objective to try to establish more exact methods of recognizing this condition so that a less radical operation might be done. In this regard, it was deemed necessary to investigate, as well, cases in which only appendectomy was done, to determine whether this operation alone could bring about cure in the face of the extensive inflammatory reaction about the offending appendix.REVIEW OF THE LITERATURE  These lesions have been described under a number of titles in the literature.
