N2  - In 1955, Richard Shackelford's edition of Bickham's great text, Operative Surgery, was published. Over the next decade, it became the standard reference work for a generation of abdominal surgeons. Now the first volume of the second edition is available. This is much more than a revision, for the esophagus, given but 200 pages in the first edition, is the subject of this entire volume.After brief chapters on anatomy, physiology, esophagoscopy, and the principles of esophageal surgery, the entire range of esophageal conditions that the surgeon may be called on to manage are fully covered. Major chapters are assigned to functional disorders, strictures, hernias and reflux, and excisional operations and replacement. Trauma, varices, tumors, and cysts are treated in others. To round out the volume, pediatric problems and sections on the mediastinum and tracheostomy are included. The numerous illustrations are usually taken from original descriptions.
